14+ hour, 38+ min ago (569+ words) Barbican, LondonAn all British programme featured music by Thea Musgrave, Vaughan Williams and William Walton, with Antoine Tamestit an expressive and sensitive soloist in the latter's Viola concertoAntonio Pappano's evangelical embrace of British music continued apace in a concert featuring a welcome rarity by Thea Musgrave, William Walton's strangely neglected Viola Concerto, and the latest in his ongoing Vaughan Williams cycle, the evocative A London Symphony.Musgrave, still composing at 97, wrote Phoenix Rising in 1997 for the late Andrew Davis, to whom Pappano dedicated this concert. A 23-minute rollercoaster, it pits a blackguardly timpanist and his stick-wielding allies against a devil-may-care hornist and his brassy backup band. The horn player enters from off stage, the timpanist stalks off in a huff, and somewhere in the middle, for no immediately discernible reason, a phoenix soars aloft in an iridescent haze of tuned…...

The old "no frills" Franklins supermarket has been flattened and the former Mitre 10 hardware store has been retrofitted with medical services and a restaurant. But little else in one of Brisbane's few surviving suburban high streets has changed in the past four decades. Bishop Auckland supported living flats plan for laundrette refused
1+ day, 9+ hour ago (342+ words) Plans to turn a former laundrette and dog grooming parlour into supported living apartments have been unanimously refused. Developer KSH had hoped to bulldoze the site at Proudfoot Drive, in Bishop Auckland, and build 17 apartments for adults with disabilities and autism there. However, Durham County Council has recommended that the planning application be turned down over a lack of information, unsatisfactory living conditions and for not fitting in with the "street scene". In its application KSH said the building was an "eyesore" and there was a "significant and growing shortage of modern supported living accommodation". KSH said the laundrette shut in September due to lack of customers, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The developer had offered to open up the laundry area to the public to "safeguard" its future. However, at the planning committee meeting, Reform councillor Tom…...
Bangor's parking 'Barnacle' is paying for itself
1+ day, 10+ hour ago (532+ words) by Annie Rupertus, Bangor Daily News Bangor's "Barnacle" parking enforcement device is pictured on Monday in Pickering Square Parking Garage. (Annie Rupertus / BDN) BANGOR, Maine (BDN) -- Bangor's new "Barnacle" parking enforcement device has been used a dozen times and helped the city recoup $2,500 in unpaid parking tickets, according to the company that manages the city's parking. The Barnacle is a trademarked device that clamps onto a car's windshield with suction cups and obstructs the driver's vision, essentially making it impossible " or very dangerous " to drive the car. After sending out warning letters in August to people who had more than three unpaid tickets, the city started deploying the device in October, said Parke Clemons, area manager for PCI Municipal Services, the company contracted by the city to manage parking. The first two months of use have shown that the device,…...
